  483. The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  484. Mythmaker: The Life of J.R.R. Tolkien by Anne E. Neimark
  485. Harry Potter series (7 books) by J.K. Rowling

Out of curiosity, I decided to look at how Tiger's reading speed, measured in the total number of books read each academic year, has changed in the past five years:

  1. Wow-that is impressive. The graph is interesting. Were many of the year 1 books early readers or picture books? One of mine is just taking off with independent reading and seems to get through books fast but they are often very thin!
Much of Tiger's reading, this year, is of really substantial books which is particularly impressive. Do you find it difficult to find sufficient books? I can imagine that you must be in the library every few days!

    1. I remember most of the Year 1 books being rather thin, so that must be why he was able to get through them so quickly. I recall watching Tiger read with the same excitement as you describe with your newly-independent reader, and that got me started on keeping a reading log just to see how many books he would get through in a year.
We use the library a lot, in addition to our own collection, so there is always enough books to read. :-) Besides, Tiger likes to reread certain books that interest him, so he doesn't always have to read new books. :-)

  2. Wow! That's quite the list. Makes me curious about what Hero(8) is reading. I might have to do this, too. Thanks for sharing this!

    1. You're welcome, Ritsumei. I think keeping a reading log for each child is a worthwhile exercise, and quite an interesting one too, so I encourage you to do it. :-)

  3. Wow, what a great list! Thank you for posting because I am always looking for good books which my children haven't read. I wish I could write a log of all they read but with five children three of whom are voracious reader, I simply couldn't find the time. I'm very grateful to you for sharing your log though!

    1. You're welcome, Claire. I take photos of the books Tiger has read before they go back to the library or back on the shelves, so I am able to capture most of what he reads but sometimes he returns the books to the shelves before I have had a chance to get the camera out, so I probably have missed a few but this list gives a good representation. :-)

    1. When we're not people watching, we read on the tube and/or the train since we spend so much time traveling on them. :-)

  5. I just saw a Redwall book we don't have in Tiger's list...I'll have no peace until I get a copy. Graphing the number of books read is a great idea.

    1. That's too funny, Carol! :-) If you're referring to "The Ribbajack", don't worry, it's not part of the Redwall series. It's a collection of short horror stories that I let Tiger read for last year's Halloween. I'd recommend parental preview before handing it to a young child.

    1. Thank you, Lynn. :-) A few books on the list are better than others, but overall they are all parent-approved. :-)
